Behind the Scenes with Amy Hudson – Care Coordinator

It is always so interesting to hear how people came to a career in care, and Amy Hudson is no different.

Norfolk born and bred, Amy went to school at Hellesdon High and Sewell Park whilst also training in Hair & Beauty at Norwich City College two days a week. Despite this, when she landed a job at the Coop, she ended up working in retail for a number of years, alongside a job on the womenswear floor at Debenhams.

However, realising she wanted a change, when a friend who was working with a care provider needed an assistant, Amy was quick to seize the opportunity and enjoyed the new administration responsibilities enormously.

It was a year later that Coronavirus swept the country and sadly, Amy’s role was made redundant but as the saying goes – ‘when one door closes another one opens’ – and within a week Amy had been for an interview and was appointed to the role of Care Coordinator with us here at Cavell Healthcare.

We have over 70 staff and with over 2,500 visits a week to organise, Amy’s days are extremely busy but she has settled in so quickly and is loving the new responsibilities.

“I love appointing carers to our wonderful clients and making the perfect match. Nothing makes me happier than when we have great feedback from a client who has enjoyed a visit from one of our team – it definitely means I’ve done my job well!”

In addition, Amy has also been through all the mandatory training, including Moving & Handling, Infection Control and Risk Assessment, and learnt to be a carer herself although she describes herself as being ‘petrified’ before she went on her first shift.

“I was so nervous about the responsibility and whether I would like it, but I just enjoyed it so much from my very first visit. Until you have done this job, you don’t realise how much these people rely on you and it is such a lovely feeling knowing your visit has had a positive impact on someone’s day. I know that a lot of people out there are sadly facing the same challenging situation I was in, with jobs being lost because of the pandemic, but I would say to anyone to give caring a go. It is hugely rewarding and we are always looking for dedicated and committed staff to join our team, so it’s a career with a great future and fabulous prospects.”
